| The original 2020 spawned a series of descendents, all identical at first glance but each with subtle changes to the styling and controls, and each adding new features. | |
![]() | The 2022 caught up with VHS and Beta by adding picture search and freeze-frame. Due to V2000's DTF system, these "trick-play" functions are near-perfect, with no noise bars or other picture disturbances; the heads can compensate for the stationary or fast-moving tape, moving as they scan each track to follow it exactly, even thought it's now effectively at a different angle. | Cosmetically, the machine is almost identical to the 2020, though there are minor changes to the controls. In particular, the "illuminated text" displays of the 2020's timer have been replaced by more conventional (though less attractive) LED's with printed labels. There was also a VR2021, which was the same as the 2020 but with the 22's updated electronics and cosmetic restyling changes. | |
| The VR2023 (right and top) added freeze-frame and slow motion playback modes, and had an AV socket built in, rather than as an optional add-on. The remote adaptor was also built in, though for some reason the actual remote sensor was still a plug-in accessory. The styling was reworked again; a cleaner, linear layout with the tuner/timer controls under a flap, and smaller cassette window to give more room for the extra buttons. | ![]() |
| All functions now had their own button -- even the picture search functions, which were separate from the fast forward / rewind buttons. | |
| The VR2024 looked identical to the 2023, but added stereo sound. This was linear, splitting the audio track into two, so it was not HiFi -- but the same was true of all domestic formats until Video8's PCM digital and VHS/Beta HiFi which mixed the sound in with the picture. Finally, there was a 2025, but this was not really from the same family; see the "2x4 super" exhibit for an explanation... |
